Research Assistants

The NPS Part-Time Work Study Research Assistant Program (RA) is an opportunity for US citizens to begin a career working on problems of interest to national security while pursuing an academic graduate degree. NPS RA123s are hired as employees of the Naval Postgraduate School supporting reimbursable research efforts while pursuing their graduate degrees.

Part-Time Work Study Research Assistants (RA1, RA2, RA3)
The Research Assistant positions (RA1, RA2, RA3) are part-time positions available to qualified NPS employees who wish to pursue advanced degrees.   

RA1For Research Assistants who possess a Bachelor’s Degree.
RA2For Research Assistants who possess a Master’s Degree.
RA3For Research Assistants who have advanced to candidacy in pursuit of a Doctoral Degree.

Qualifying Steps

  1. The candidate is hired by an NPS Academic Department/Group as a Research Assistant.
  2. The employee applies for conversion into a RA123 program per the NAVPGSCOL INSTRUCTION 1524.2.

Admissions Process

  1. Once the employee is converted into the RA123 program and designated an RA1, RA2 or RA3, he/she must immediately apply to a degree granting academic program that has been determined during the RA123 conversion process. NPS Admissions utilizes an online application  system.
  2. Once approved by the academic department for admission, the Admissions Office will send an acceptance letter to the individual with a copy to Academic Planning. The applicant will be immediately enrolled into the approved degree program and will become a "managed" student vice a space available student.
