California has the largest and most robust of any state economy in the U.S. California alone ranks among the top ten economies in the world, and is at the forefront of such diverse fields as high technology research, aerospace and agriculture.
Within California, the Monterey Peninsula and the surrounding Monterey Bay crescent are hotbeds of innovation both in technology and higher education. Surrounding the bay are more than 20 institutions that deal with marine research, higher education, meteorology and oceanography.
A stone’s throw away in San Jose is Silicon Valley, the nexus of cyber technology development and a leading center of research in both the U.S. and the world.
NPS faculty, staff and students interact regularly with California State University, Monterey Bay; the University of California at Santa Cruz; the Defense Language Institute; the Naval Research Laboratory; the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center; the Defense Manpower Data Center; NASA Ames Research Center; and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.
