NPS is fortunate to be located 20 miles from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), affording many opportunities for collaboration with a world center for advanced research and education in ocean science and technology.
NPS’ Meteorology and Oceanography degree programs benefit greatly from proximity to Monterey civilian marine research institutions, including MBARI and Moss Landing Marine Labs. NPS uses several research vessels owned by the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System and moored at Moss Landing. Research vessels play a critical role in data collection and research in such NPS courses such as Operational Oceanography & Meteorology, Tactical Oceanography, Descriptive Physical Oceanography and Wave & Surf Forecasting.
NPS is also an active member of the Monterey Bay Crescent Ocean Research Consortium (MBCORC). Comprised of 26 organizations, MBCORC is dedicated to promoting research, education and outreach activities having to do with coastal and marine systems. Members meet quarterly to exchange information, strengthen collaborative efforts, and identify new opportunities for cooperative initiatives.
NPS faculty members are involved in the Youth Council on Ocean Governance (YCOG)--a Monterey organization that invites the involvement of students from local area high schools in education and governance issues relating to marine life and ocean stewardship. While learning about the criticality of oceans to the planet and learning about the science and engineering required to provide proper stewardship of the world’s oceans, students also are engaged in policy study and development. This initiative provides an intriguing bridge between science and policy, secondary and postsecondary institutions, scientists and policy makers.
The Army’s Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLI-FLC) in Monterey trains enlisted and officer students in a multitude of foreign languages, and as a result has enjoyed its own strategic global impact for many years. Currently, DLI and NPS share each other’s expertise and multiply their benefit to DoD by collaborating on instruction and research and reducing costs by sharing some administrative support services. DLI students attend foreign geographic area courses offered at NPS, and NPS teaches courses at DLI for students in pursuit of bachelor’s degrees. In addition, DLI students often work with the Naval Postgraduate School to augment its administrative and support staff. Finally, a three-way institutional collaboration is ongoing as NPS faculty in the Department of Information Science work closely with DLI and the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) to develop a computer-based simulation of gestures as an added cultural context for language acquisition.
NPS’ location approximately 100 miles from Stanford University has also lent great strength to the collaborative relationship between NPS Homeland Security and Stanford University faculty, and so to the Homeland Security degree program. The Homeland Security degree currently includes a course co-taught by NPS and Stanford faculty. Finally, the Homeland Security and Stanford faculty are working together on a significant 3-year joint research project on organizational learning within the Department of Homeland Security.
