21st Annual Acquisition Research Symposium

Date: May 8, 2024 to May 9, 2024
Location: Embassy Suites, Monterey, CA

About the event: The Acquisition Research Symposium is the premier event connecting acquisition professionals from across disciplines and around the world. Senior acquisition officials from the Departments of Defense and the U.S. Navy serve as keynote speakers and panel chairs who present their critiques and comments on research papers and priorities. Many attendees are Naval Postgraduate School faculty and graduate students engaged in acquisition-related research.

This year’s symposium takes up the theme of “Resourcing Innovation” in coordination with the final report from the Commission on Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Execution (PPBE) Reform. Many panels and papers explore the role of funding and the budget process in driving acquisition innovation. Other panels consider topics including space acquisition, supply chains and logistics, artificial intelligence, systems engineering, software-based systems, digital engineering, cybersecurity, shipbuilding, autonomous vessels, and international acquisition.

The symposium is free to attend and offers both in person and virtual attendance.

Hosted by the Acquisition Research Program, Department of Defense Management, in conjunction with the Naval Warfare Studies Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School.

JIFX 24-3

Date: May 13, 2024 to May 17, 2024
Location: Camp Roberts

Joint Interagency Field Experimentation / www.nps.edu/fx
Event Focus Area: C5ISR & Countermeasures
NPS Field Laboratory at Camp Roberts

The C5ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) framework represents a critical foundation for modern military operations. It encompasses the integration of advanced technologies, information systems, and communication networks to enhance situational awareness, decision-making, and operational effectiveness. Countermeasures, on the other hand, are strategies and technologies developed to protect C5ISR systems from a wide array of threats, including cyber attacks, electronic warfare, and physical interferences.

Atomic Clocks

Date: May 17, 2024
Time: 11:00
Location: Spanagel 117

Presentation by: Professor Kurt Gibble, Department of Physics at Penn State.

Atomic clocks realize the most accurate measurements of any physical observable, determining the frequencies of atomic transitions to a part in 1018. They exploit the high-coherence central to atomic physics that underlies many applications, from clocks and atom interferometry to quantum information processing. I will describe how atomic clocks tick and discuss several general interest physics aspects of modern microwave and optical frequency atomic clocks. These include quantum mechanical collisions at microKelvin temperatures, frequency shifts due to microwave photon recoils, laser-cooling of cadmium for optical lattice clocks, tests of Beyond Standard Model physics using isotope shifts, and tests of general relativity with orbiting atomic clocks.
